My name is Ruben Reyes, and I’m the Multimedia Intern for the Media Arts Center San Diego (MACSD). The MACSD staff manages a small micro-cinema called the Digital Gym in which stateside and international independent films are screened year-round. The Exhibitions Department prides itself in booking inventive and original content, a practice that has made the Digital Gym San Diego’s truly independent art-house theater.
We are soon premiering a Korean documentary "Songs from the North". I was wondering if you would be able to deliver the following information to your students, community and peers. We’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time.
Synopsis: North Korea, a country typically seen through the distorted lens of jingoistic propaganda and
derisive satire. Interweaving footage from director Soon-Mi-Yoo’s three visits to North Korea together
with songs, spectacle, popular cinema and archival footage, SONGS FROM THE NORTH tries to
understand the psychology and popular imagery of the North Korean people. To look closely and
objectively at North Korea, a country that challenges our most fundamental assumptions about the
human condition, is ultimately to question the meaning of freedom, love and patriotism.
