한국전쟁 당시 장진호 전투에 참여했던 은퇴 해병 진 화이트씨(사진)는 ‘초신 퓨’(The Chosin Few) 샌디에이고 북부지부의 이사다. ‘초신’은 ‘장진’을 당시 지도에 사용됐던 대로 일본식으로 읽은 것으로 ‘초신 퓨’는 장진호 전투에서 살아남은 병사들이라는 의미다. 80년대 결성된 이 단체는 미 전역에 지부를 두고 있으며 샌디에이고 북부지부는 91년에 창설됐다. 현재 40여명의 생존 한국전 참전용사들이 매월 만남을 지속하고 있다. (2016년 현재는 약 20명 생존 멤버, 하지만 active한 멤버는 불과 5명 정도)
미군의 전사에 ‘역사상 가장 고전했던 전투’로 기록돼있는 장진호 전투는 1950년 11월26일부터 12월13일까지 미 해병대 1사단이 개마고원의 장진호에서 작전을 펼치다 개입한 15만 명의 중공군에 포위돼 전멸위기까지 갔던 것으로 잘 알려져 있다. 이때 겪은 부상으로 평생을 고생하고 있는 화이트씨도 “동상이 얼마나 심했는지 아직까지도 발에 피가 잘 통하지 않아 고통스럽다. 특히 당시 최대의 적이었던 혹한 속의 전투는 200명이었던 우리 중대원 중 160여명의 목숨을 앗아갔다”고 회상한다.
